How does the play implicitly place Desdemona on trial for infidelity? What are the assumptions that underlie this inquisition into Desdemona’s guilt and innocence? We will question the assumptions that underpin both Shakespeare’s dramatic device and the misogynistic imagery associated with it. Othello declares, for example, “if [Desdemona] be false, O, then heaven mocks itself” (III. iii. 276). Yet why is Desdemona set up as a standard for the virtue and truth of “heaven” itself?
