In this tutorial on the Narrative voice within A Christmas Carol we examine why is the preface important, including the subversion of conventions, the positioning of author as ‘friend’ of the reader and the invitation to transform. We ask who is the narrator, examining the first person, first hand, trust, colloquial, interjections at key moments, the positioning of reader and direct address. We also analyse what other narrative devices are used, including the use of ‘Once upon a time’ signalling playfulness with time; the building of tension in the first stave and biblical language.
