What is “othering” in literary criticism, and how does it apply to Jane Eyre? In this tutorial we look at the concept of othering (Edward Said) and the application to Jane Eyre, especially concerning Jane herself as an outsider in most of her situations. We also discuss the history and significance of Bertha Mason (with reference to Wide Sargasso Sea).
