What are the main themes of the period? The French Revolution was one of the greatest events in the history of Europe. It led to changes in the political institutions and ideas that have affected the world ever since. It led to years of warfare which changed the face of Europe. It also led to the emergence of Napoleon first as a dictator then as an Emperor. Not only France but much of Europe was changed by his introduction of key elements of the revolution and creating new more unified states. The history of warfare was changed by his stunning campaigns. The period from 1789 saw violent, sometimes very shocking and dramatic events and the rise of larger than life historical figures. It brought the people onto the political stage and paved the way for the nationalism of the next two centuries. Key Concept: Political Discourse
