This podcast provides a detailed evaluation of Nicholas II as ruler exploring the challenges faced by his autocracy in the years 1894 to 1914. There is debate as to how far Nicholas was himself responsible for the events and developments that occurred during that time, in particular the revolution of 1905 and the failures of the Duma experiment. The emphasis is on changing political authority and its importance for the future of the Tsarist regime.
